The way we teach science currently is in itself a critical representation of the need to reconsider the role of culture in teaching and learning. As students interact with teachers and classrooms their since of belonging is critical to their capacity to maintain an intrinsic motivation to do the work of school success. Unfortunately, science has maintained a since of pride regarding it's cultural neutrality. Science has shed the criticism of cultural critique by arguing that everyone must assimilate to the culture of science. The problem emerges when we never consider whether incorporating students' own culture can enhance students' learning. Contemporary researchers have begun to examine this question in detail. Specifically, the research of Dr. Chris Emdin is attaching this very issue. Take a look as some of his newest work in this video. I hope work like Dr. Emdin's is recognized and leads to improved teaching, learning, and career opportunities for people of color.
